How to Find the Right Mentor for You

Mentors are invaluable when it comes to making your business the best that it can be. Working one-on-one with an experienced advisor will catalyse both your professional and personal development. Not only do mentors provide support and guidance, they offer clarity and insight that can only be attained through an objective lens - along with many other benefits.

We work with a number of mentors throughout both metro and regional Victoria, with specialties spanning digital tourism marketing, creative branding, tech and IT development, graphic design and everything in between. But with so many expert mentors to choose from, how do you know which one is best for you?

We’ve created a three-step-plan to help you find your perfect mentor match.

1. Ask yourself: What is the key thing you need to focus on right now in your business?

The journey as a business owner is full of highs and lows - and it can be as infinite as you want it to be. One of the many benefits of working with a mentor is that it will take your business to the next level - regardless of which stage you’re at. When you’re deciding who the best person for that job will be, it’s important to figure out the key focus area for your business. Are you just starting out, and need help with your branding and online presence? Are you a new business who wants to level up your efficiency with IT support? Or perhaps you’ve been around for a while and want help with scaling, or growth strategy? Once you have an idea of what you want to focus on, you’ll know what expertise to look for in your mentor’s profile.

2. Browse the mentor portal to find your perfect match

Now that you know what you’re looking for in a mentor, you can choose from our menu of top creative experts in Victoria. To find information on each individual mentor, head to our Digital Solutions homepage, then scroll down to the section that reads ‘Meet some of our mentors’. In that tab, there will be six mentor bios on display - but if you click the ‘View all mentors’ button at the bottom, you’ll be taken to our mentoring page where we’ve divided the experts into regional and metro groups.

There, you’ll see the name, location and a summary of each mentor. The ‘+ Expertise and bio’ button will tell you exactly what their areas of expertise are - such as digital marketing, social media, and content - along with more information about their work history, and links to their website and social pages. Remember - you don’t necessarily have to work with a mentor who is in your specific industry. Someone from another field who has expertise in the area you want to focus on can provide huge value to your business.

3. Look at the mentor’s previous work to see if the shoe fits

Make a shortlist of the mentors that stand out to you. Take time to look through each website at previous work they have done, and see if it aligns with your goals. If the mentor has social pages listed, it can also be helpful to scroll through and see if the personality that comes through is what you’re looking for.
